New Scholarship for visiting 4th year Anesthesiology 4 week elective rotation

January 31, 2020 by

We are proud to offer up to $1500 to help offset the costs of travel and housing for highly qualified medical students who wish to do a visiting 4 week anesthesiology elective rotation at UVA. This rotation can occur anytime during the months of July through October. The ideal candidates will have backgrounds, interests, and/or goals that will bring diverse experiences and perspectives to UVA’s Anesthesiology Department.

Applications open concurrent with VSLO application with a deadline of April 15th.

The Anesthesiology 4th year elective is designed to offer students an in-depth, immersive experience in the practice of anesthesiology within our department at the University of Virginia. Students will be paired with resident and attending physicians and have the opportunity to observe, assist, and engage in the clinical care and anesthetic management of a variety of patient cases. The rotation is designed to highlight the breadth of our specialty practice and can be tailored to the individual interests of the student. Under supervision, students will learn and participate in patient pre-operative evaluation, case planning, preparation, and management. Students will learn regional and neuraxial techniques, airway management, placement of invasive monitors, and interpretation of physiological data for patients undergoing elective and emergent cases. Our clinical volume is high, often complex, and presents opportunities in a multitude of specialty care settings including cardiothoracic, vascular, neurologic, obstetric, pediatric, and ambulatory, in addition to acute and chronic pain management. The student is expected to attend weekly departmental lectures and conferences, as well as focused student workshops and learning sessions.

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students to consider a career in anesthesiology, give them a preview of the various sub-specialties within the field, enhance students’ awareness of opportunities in academic medicine and provide them with specific mentoring and networking opportunities. This platform provides students an exposure to the practice of anesthesiology, one that may not be available at all institutions. We hope to afford students the experience of living and working in Charlottesville, while experiencing firsthand our UVA “anesthesia family”.

Competitive applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence, strong leadership, and a variety of extracurricular and/or volunteer experiences. Students should be strongly motivated to pursue a career in Anesthesiology. The program is open to all applicants, but preference will be given to those who are first generation medical school attendees, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, individuals who have overcome substantial educational or economic obstacles or students who come from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Alaskan Native).
