We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mike Mazzeffi, MD, MPH, MSc, FASA, FCCM, as chair of the UVA Department of Anesthesiology, effective today, February 11th. Dr. Mazzeffi, an accomplished researcher and clinician, has done an outstanding job leading the department as interim chair since last January, and we are pleased that he will assume the role on a permanent basis.
Dr. Mazzeffi joined UVA Health in August 2022. He was previously executive vice chair and director of cardiac critical care at George Washington University. Prior to that, he was a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was division chief for critical care medicine, medical director of the hospital’s rapid response team, and co-chair of the hospital’s resuscitation committee and patient blood management committee. A graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, he completed a residency in anesthesiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and fellowships in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and adult cardiac anesthesiology. Dr. Mazzeffi has co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and made more than 70 regional, national, and international presentations. His research has been funded by the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation. He serves as an associate editor for Anesthesiology and Section Editor for perioperative hematology for the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology. Throughout his career, Dr. Mazzeffi has demonstrated a strong commitment to faculty and student development, which makes him an excellent leader for this role.
