I'm dr peggy mcnall and i am the john rollingston professor and chair of the department of anesthesiology at the university of virginia. We have a fantastic relationship with our surgeons and if you ask our surgeons over and over again what is so strong about the faculty residents and crnas in the department of anesthesiology hands down they will say that the clinical care they provide is the best in the country when they look over the drapes they know that their patients are in the hands of experts in delivering anesthesia care. We are so immensely proud of our educational programs both our general anesthesia residency and our fellowships the residency program recruits every year some of the top students in the country and we recruit those great individuals because we boast just a phenomenal training program. The things that i think make the university of virginia stand out is number one the breadth or wide breadth of patient exposure to every type of illness to every pathology you can imagine. Our research program is led by dr z zuo one of the things that we really pride ourselves on is giving our residents and trainees an opportunity to focus on research over the course of their residency training. So if there are individuals who are interested in pursuing research as a long-term career commitment we have the opportunity for our residents to do electives; not only basic science researchers but also work with some of our very robust clinical researchers. So we have individuals here who are studying and applying the best way to educate the next generation of anesthesiologists and physicians in general. We educate in every possible way. We have a very strong classic didactic program for our medical students our residents and actually our our faculty teaching one another. One of the things that we are most proud of is our simulation center and not only do we dommulti-disciplinary and interdisciplinary simulation with our residents but we're very proud of our medical student rotations in simulation. So truly if you come here to train, you'll learn how to deliver great anesthesia care, whether anesthesia or medicine in general, as you're developing your career long term.
