Visiting 4th-Year Scholarship

Visiting 4th-year scholarship for the anesthesiology

4-week elective rotation

We are proud to offer up to $1500 to help offset the costs of travel and housing for highly qualified medical students who wish to do a visiting 4-week anesthesiology elective rotation at UVA.  This rotation can occur anytime during the months of July through October.  The ideal candidates will have backgrounds, interests, and/or goals that will bring diverse experiences and perspectives to UVA’s Anesthesiology Department.

Rotation Description

The Anesthesiology 4th year elective offers students an opportunity to observe and participate in the administration of inpatient and outpatient operative anesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, and the management of acute and chronic pain.  The students, under the close supervision of resident and attending staff, will participate in the administration of inhalation, intravenous, and conduction anesthesia, and the use of diagnostic and therapeutic regional anesthetic techniques. The students will learn principles of preoperative evaluation, and the physiological and pharmacological management of the patient undergoing surgery. Points to be emphasized include airway management, monitoring techniques, the interpretation of laboratory values obtained intraoperatively and the pharmacology of the anesthetic agents and other drugs used in patient management.  The student is expected to attend weekly departmental lectures and conferences, as well as focused student workshops and learning sessions.

 About the scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students to consider a career in anesthesiology, give them a preview of the various sub-specialties within the field, enhance students’ awareness of opportunities in academic medicine, and provide them with specific mentoring and networking opportunities.  This platform provides students an exposure to the practice of anesthesiology, one that may not be available at all institutions.  We hope to afford students the experience of living and working in Charlottesville, while experiencing firsthand our UVA “anesthesia family”.

Competitive applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence, strong leadership and a variety of extracurricular and/or volunteer experience will be considered.  Students should be strongly motivated to pursue a career in Anesthesiology.  The program is open to all applicants, but preference will be given to those who are first generation medical school attendees, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, individuals who have overcome substantial educational or economic obstacles or students who come from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Alaskan Native).
