However, a\u00a0new study\u00a0found a more productive way insomniacs can use the internet: online sleep therapy programs, which can help restore regular sleep patterns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\">One in ten adults have diagnosable insomnia, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/30\/health\/insomnia-online-therapy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York\u00a0<i>Times<\/i><\/a><i><\/i>\u00a0reports, though the condition tends to affect\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2015\/12\/insomnia-cant-sleep.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women more than men.<\/a>\u00a0The study, published in the journal\u00a0<em>JAMA Psychiatry<\/em>, found that the typical form of treatment for insomnia \u2014 cognitive behavior therapy \u2014 can be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2589161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effectively delivered online<\/a>\u00a0through an interactive program. Scientists from the University of Virginia enlisted 303 people between the ages of 21 and 65, with half trying out the six-week online therapy product and the other half receiving a digital \u201cplacebo\u201d of education and advice on insomnia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\">The program, called SHUTi, involves traditional cognitive therapy techniques, such as sleep restriction \u2014 where people set regular \u201csleep windows\u201d \u2014 and another called stimulus control, which breaks the association with lying in bed and watching a movie or eating, according to the\u00a0<i>Times<\/i>.
