The NIH included the discovery in its 2018 research highlights in the category of \u201cfindings with potential for enhancing human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the scientists enhanced vessel drainage in older mice, the animals\u2019 cognitive abilities improved. In contrast, disrupting these vessels increased buildup of Alzheimer\u2019s disease-related proteins,\u201d the NIH wrote. \u201cThese results suggest a possible way to combat the cognitive decline seen in aging and age-related diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was made by a team led by Jonathan Kipnis, chair of UVA\u2019s Department of Neuroscience and of the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG). The finding builds on a 2015 scientific paper from Kipnis\u2019 lab detailing the existence and function of the lymphatic vessels in the meninges surrounding the brain \u2013 vessels medical textbooks long insisted did not exist. The paper made headlines around the world and transformed scientists\u2019 understanding of the brain\u2019s relationship to the immune system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Featured by Forbes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kipnis\u2019 new aging discovery also was saluted by\u00a0Forbes\u00a0in a year-end article headlined\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robinseatonjefferson\/2018\/12\/21\/groundbreaking-research-in-2018-the-furthered-the-study-of-alzheimers-cancer-and-blood-pressure\/#96a861b28df4\">\u201cGroundbreaking research in 2018 that furthered the study of Alzheimer\u2019s, cancer and blood pressure.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article notes the vital importance of NIH funding for medical research. All the discoveries featured in both the Forbes and NIH lists had received financial support from the NIH.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith NIH support, scientists across the United States and around the world conduct wide-ranging research to discover ways to enhance health, lengthen life and reduce illness and disability,\u201d the NIH Research Roundup notes.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, the NIH last presented Kipnis with its prestigious Director\u2019s Pioneer Award.
