I’m excited that I get to study the immune system and learn how the immune system protects our bodies from infection and cancer, and I’m thrilled to work with people from all over the world each and every day- incredible, brilliant, and creative individuals. My name is Michael Brown. I’m a professor in the department of medicine. My research team studies natural killer cells, or NK cells. NK cells are an essential component of white blood cells, a particular type that protects the body from infection and cancer. One focus of my research team is to study how NK cells are protecting us from lethal infections like HIV. In a recent discovery, we found that NK cells can use paired receptors to identify and ultimately kill infected targets. Our research will identify signaling pathways used by antiviral NK cells, and by identifying those signaling pathways, we can identify new targets of immunotherapy. Our hope and aim is that we can translate the science, our findings, into new immune therapies that can be used to treat patients with chronic virus infections like HIV.
