UVA Hook Scholar alumna Laura Kolbe MD (UVA SMD 2016)’s poetry collection, Little Pharma, won the 2020 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize and will be published in October 2021 by the University of Pittsburgh Press/Pitt Poetry Series. The earliest of the collection’s poems were written while Laura was a UVA medical student, while most were written during her internal medicine residency at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston. “Writing the poems,” Laura says, “felt like growing a subsistence garden—what do I need to make to survive? Or maybe like cutting trails—how can I keep finding my way out and back?” Laura is now a hospitalist and medical ethicist at Weill Cornell School of Medicine in New York City and writes regularly for literary and popular periodicals.
