Donna Chen, M.D., M.P.H., and Lois Shepherd, J.D., along with former bioethics interns Eleanor Muse and Alika Johnston, have a new article out in the September-October issue of the Hastings Center Report.\u00a0 In\u201cWhat Medical Students Teach:\u00a0 The Healing Skill of Being a Team Player,\u201d<\/a> the authors share the results of their mixed-methods analysis of two hundred essays written by recent medical students.<\/p>\n

The authors found that when asked to share their ob\u00adservations of how various clinicians\u2019 actions contributed to a positive or negative experience in the \u201cinformal curriculum,\u201d medical students identi\u00adfied relationship-enhancing behaviors that correspond in substantial mea\u00adsure with Larry Churchill and David Schenck\u2019s eight \u201chealing skills \u00a0(e.g., \u201cDo the little things\u201d and \u201cTake time\u201d), aligning themselves with the ancient understanding of \u201cethics as a healing art.\u201d They also found that students see good teamwork<\/em> as ethically important and critical to fostering healing relationships with patients and families\u2014both directly, as when clinicians and patients work together as a team, and even indirectly, such as when clinicians work together as a team outside the presence of patients and families.\u00a0Building on the students\u2019 observations, the authors propose ways in which \u201cBe a team player\u201d ought to be considered a 9th<\/sup> healing skill and is a moral imperative in today\u2019s modern health care systems because of its essential contribution to healing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
