{"id":159,"date":"2015-12-17T13:52:22","date_gmt":"2015-12-17T18:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/biophysics-program\/?page_id=159"},"modified":"2024-02-02T15:16:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T20:16:39","slug":"the-phd-in-biophysics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/biophysics-program\/the-phd-in-biophysics\/","title":{"rendered":"BIMS BIOPHYSICS PROGRAM GUIDELINES"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Requirements for the Ph.D. in Biophysics<\/h5>\n<h4>First Year<\/h4>\n<p>Three six-week rotations<\/p>\n<p>Fall Semester<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Core Course in Integrative Biosciences<\/em> (BIMS 6000)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spring Semester<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Biophysical Foundations of Molecular and Cellular Physiology<\/em> (Faham and Tamm) (Spring Module 1)\u00a0AND\u00a0<em>Molecular Interactions and Driving Forces<\/em> (Peter Kasson and Michael Wiener) (Spring Module 2)<\/li>\n<li><em>Responsible Conduct of Research<\/em> (Research Ethics)<\/li>\n<li><em>Biophysics and Physiology Journal Club<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Second Year<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Biology at Atomic Resolution: Foundations of Crystallography and NMR<\/em> (Bushweller and Derewenda) (Fall Module 1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Other requirements<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Students are required to take at least one additional elective module on any topic.<\/li>\n<li>Students will also be required to attend the Biophysics and Physiology journal club throughout their graduate careers.<\/li>\n<li>Students must maintain a graduate GPA of at least 3.0.<\/li>\n<li>Students entering with a Master\u2019s degree may request an exemption from the Core Course in Integrative Biosciences if previous graduate course work and research experience are deemed comparable. \u00a0One or two of the rotations may be waived if the student has previous experience in the lab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Qualifying Exam<\/h4>\n<p>Students are expected to write and orally defend the Thesis Proposal by September 1 at the beginning of the third year. If the student enters with a Master\u2019s degree, they are expected to write and orally defend the thesis proposal by January 1 of the second year.<\/p>\n<h4>Thesis Proposal<\/h4>\n<p>The student prepares a written proposal for their thesis project in the form of an NIH R01 grant proposal. \u00a0The student should use the instructions for the NIH Standard Form 424 <a href=\"http:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/forms.htm\">Grant application<\/a> to help prepare the proposal.\u00a0 The document will be presented orally to the student&#8217;s selected thesis committee, which includes the thesis advisor(s), and at least three other tenure track faculty members (minimum of four members). \u00a0At least one faculty member must be from outside the home department of the thesis mentor and acts as the representative of the Graduate Faculty. \u00a0Faculty with secondary or guest appointments in the home department are not eligible to act as the representative.\u00a0 The eligible faculty are those recognized by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). \u00a0Eligible faculty generally does not include faculty with clinical appointments except those with secondary appointments in a basic science department, or those who have approved membership in GSAS.\u00a0 Faculty with primary appointments in departments in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (i.e., Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, etc.) are generally eligible.\u00a0 The committee may decide to award a full pass, conditional pass, or fail. The committee will provide detailed critiques to the student in order to meet the conditions to fully pass, or to help improve the thesis proposal and the oral defense in the case of a fail. The student must pass the qualifying exam on the second attempt or the program will recommend dismissal from the Graduate School.<\/p>\n<h4>Thesis Defense<\/h4>\n<p>Requirements for the\u00a0Dissertation and Final Examination are as described at the <a href=\"http:\/\/records.ureg.virginia.edu\/preview_entity.php?catoid=26&amp;ent_oid=1673&amp;returnto=657#doct_of_phil\">Graduate School<\/a> for Arts and Sciences (GSAS) website.\u00a0 The time limit for completion of the Ph.D. is seven years from the beginning of matriculation as a graduate student at the University of Virginia, but most students finish within five years.<\/p>\n<h4>During the semester the student will graduate, the student must:<\/h4>\n<p>(1) File the <a href=\"https:\/\/applycentral.virginia.edu\/apply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ph.D. Degree Application<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 The deadlines are October 1, February 1 or July 1 for the fall, spring or summer semesters, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>(2) File the <a href=\"http:\/\/artsandsciences.virginia.edu\/gradschool\/forms\/index.html\"><strong>Unsigned Title Page<\/strong><\/a> [link to http:\/\/artsandsciences.virginia.edu\/gradschool\/forms\/index.html]of the thesis with GSAS.\u00a0 The deadlines are November 1, April 1 or July 1 for the fall, spring or summer semesters, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>(3) File the finalized, signed dissertation along with the signed <a href=\"http:\/\/bims.virginia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/SOM_Final-Exam2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Final Examination<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 with the School of Medicine Registrar.\u00a0 The deadlines are December 1, May 1 or August 1 for the fall, spring or summer semesters, respectively.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/artsandsciences.virginia.edu\/gradschool\/requirements\/index.html\"><strong><em>Click here<\/em><\/strong><\/a> <strong><em>for the Physical Standards of the thesis, a sample title page and checklist of graduation requirements.<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/artsandsciences.virginia.edu\/gradschool\/forms\/index.html\"><strong><em>Click here<\/em><\/strong><\/a> <strong><em>for graduation forms.<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Please\u00a0contact\u00a0Carrie Walker\u00a0(<a href=\"mailto:caw9g@virginia.edu\">caw9g@virginia.edu<\/a>) for assistance in filling out the form.<\/p>\n<p>The oral defense will be done in two parts: (1) the public defense, which is in the form of a formal\u00a0publically advertised seminar, followed by (2) the private defense which is a private session with only the thesis committee. \u00a0Generally, this is the same committee that heard the thesis proposal, but the membership can change according to the discretion of the student and advisor.
