Dr. Edward (Ed) H. Egelman, Harrison Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, has been elected to the American Academy of Art and Sciences. Ed joined UVA in 1999 and has built an exceptional scientific track record. He has been instrumental in developing new methods in cryo-electron microscopy to solve the structure of protein-nucleic acid complexes and pioneered techniques to determine at atomic resolution how spiral-shaped filaments contribute to bacterial pathogenesis. His current work focusses on self-assembling peptides. His team demonstrated recently that collagen assembly can deviate from the traditionally accepted right-handed twist, expanding the scope of collagen’s structural diversity. He has authored more than 230 papers, lectured internationally, served as past president of the Biophysical Society and as editor-in-chief of Biophysical Journal. Ed is also an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, and an elected fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
