At University of Virginia Medical School, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Dr. Tushir-Singh and Dr. Bhatnagar are developing a novel and selective cancer immunotherapy based approach to target aggressive breast cancers. The proposed research was awarded after two-tiered peer review process through a nationwide grant competition. \u00a0Under Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program\u2019s (CDMRP) mission of transforming healthcare through innovative and impactful research, US Department of Defense will support the proposed research by Dr. Tushir-Singh and Dr. Bhatnagar for a period of three years (January 2018 to December 2020).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>About DOD Breakthrough award:<\/u><\/strong> The intent of the Breakthrough Award is to support promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. The critical components of this award mechanism are high impact research focused to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prevent breast cancer (primary prevention)<\/li>\n<li>Identify determinants of breast cancer initiation, risk, or susceptibility<\/li>\n<li>Distinguish deadly from indolent breast cancers<\/li>\n<li>Conquer the problems of overdiagnosis and overtreatment<\/li>\n<li>Identify what drives breast cancer growth; determine how to stop it<\/li>\n<li>Identify why some breast cancers become metastatic<\/li>\n<li>Determine why\/how breast cancer cells lie dormant for years and then re-emerge (recurrence); determine how to prevent recurrence<\/li>\n<li>Revolutionize treatment regimens by replacing them with ones that are more effective and less toxic<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate the mortality associated with metastatic breast cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Dr. Jogender Tushir-Singh, Ph.D (Initiating PI) and Dr. Sanchita Bhatnagar, Ph.D (Partnering PI) for being awarded with Department of Defense (DoD), Breast Cancer Research Program Breakthrough award.
