Sarah Dremel, PhD, Joins UVACCC Research Faculty
UVACCC welcomes Sarah Dremel, PhD, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, to the Molecular Genetics and Epigenetics Research Program. Dr. Dremel studies gene expression in herpesvirus infections (Kaposi’s sarcoma herpesvirus, herpes simplex virus). Using molecular biology and high-throughput sequencing, she investigates how stress alters cellular RNA pathways and products. Her current work examines RNA ligases in nucleic acid damage and how viruses exploit RNA Polymerase III to enhance protein translation.
Dr. Dremel earned dual BS degrees in Biochemistry and Genetics and Cellular Development from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in Molecular Virology and Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer virology at the National Cancer Institute. Outside of the lab, Dr. Dremel enjoys traveling, puzzles and board games.
