Christopher P. Holstege, M.D. has served Student Health and Wellness since 2013. He also is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine and Chief of the University of Virginia’s Division of Medical Toxicology, positions he has held since 1999. He has served as the Director of the Blue Ridge Poison Center. He established the Center of Clinical Toxicology that was formally recognized in 2001 by the School of Medicine, a 24/7/365 clinical medical service that provides care for poisoned patients. His clinical expertise pertaining to poisonings has resulted in his being called upon to assist in numerous criminal poisoning cases. Dr. Holstege has provided care for not only poisoned patients, but also serves as an active member of the emergency medicine faculty at the University of Virginia.   PubMed Publications

Ed Markowski, LPC, CTM
Threat Assessment and Management

Ed Markowski, LPC, CTM, is the Director of Threat Assessment at the University of Virginia. Ed chairs the multidisciplinary violence prevention committee and the threat assessment team (TAT) and oversees the Office of Threat Assessment. Since 2008, Ed has held positions within higher education and healthcare, assessing, managing, and consulting on thousands of cases involving communicated threats, weapons, intimate partner violence, and stalking. Ed is part of a collaborative network of threat assessment professionals across the U.S. working in public and private sectors to research and prevent incidents of targeted violence. Ed is a Certified Threat Manager (CTM), a Certified Master Trainer, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and a member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP).

Karie Gibson, Psy.D., LP

Dr. Karie A. Gibson is an internationally recognized expert within the behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) community, with a unique background as a psychologist, FBI Profiler, and FBI Special Agent. For over twenty years, she has assessed and mitigated crises across complex, multifaceted problem sets—delivering positive outcomes in a creative manner that protects people, operational integrity, and brand. Most recently leading the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, her work has focused on preventing mass violence, including operational experience in the mitigation of hundreds of “persons of concern” cases. Dr. Gibson has personally deployed to multiple mass casualty events and led post-attack analyses to determine offender motivational drivers. She has helped organizations build and lead BTAM programs that identify risk early and prevent violence before it escalates. Drawing on her experience leading national-level threat assessments, she now supports corporate, private industry, and healthcare leaders navigating insider risk, high-risk terminations, reputational threats, and workforce safety concerns.
