Human Specimens/Tissue
Will your study involve the collection of human specimens/tissue?
Principal Investigators who possess or use the materials described below are required to register those materials through the IBC online system (NetBadge required):
• Microorganisms
• Human derived materials
• Non-human primate derived materials
• Biotoxins with an LD50 of less than 100 micrograms per kilogram of body weight in vertebrates
• Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecule activities as required by the NIH Guidelines for research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules
• Select agents as defined by CDC (42 CFR 73) or USDA (9 CFR 121).

The Biorepository and Tissue Research Facility (BTRF) is a core facility at UVA involved in the procurement and processing of human tissue and other biospecimens for research purposes. The BTRF, on a fee-for-service basis, can also assist clinical investigators in the collection, processing, and shipping of research blood, urine and tissue samples.
Will your study involve shipping human specimens/tissue?
Anyone responsible for shipping any human specimens/tissue must complete a training program prior to shipping infectious or biological substances. (Please note that dry ice is considered a hazardous substance so shipping with dry ice requires the IATA/DOT training as well.) To satisfy the training program requirement, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) offers Shipping Infectious Substances Training (IATA/DOT) online. Those who complete training must retain a training certificate (provided by EHS) confirming that they passed the final exam. Shipping Infectious Substances Training (IATA/DOT) is valid for two years.
