Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Specialty Clinic
Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Specialty Clinic
The Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Specialty Clinic at the University of Virginia provides advanced, multidisciplinary care for patients living with HS — a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that can cause painful nodules, abscesses, drainage, and scarring. Our clinic focuses on developing individualized treatment plans to obtain long-term disease control and improve quality of life.
We care for patients across the full spectrum of HS, from early disease to severe, treatment-refractory HS.
Our clinic offers:
- Advanced medical therapies, including injectable biologic medications (self-administered and access to IV infusion services) and oral therapies
- Surgical management including deroofing surgery
- Laser therapy for hair removal (Nd:YAG and Alexandrite lasers)
- Multidisciplinary care as appropriate (e.g., referrals to and collaboration with surgery, wound care, pain management, rheumatology)
- Clinical pharmacist and nurse coordinator support
- Access to clinical trials and emerging therapies
Our Approach:
Every patient receives an individualized treatment plan. Depending on disease severity and prior treatments, care may include:
- Evidence-based medical therapy (topical, oral, biologic, and targeted treatments) for chronic maintenance
- Flare management with acute treatment and rapid intervention strategies
- Surgical coordination when appropriate
- Pain and symptom control
- Lifestyle counseling for control of flare triggers
- Long-term disease suppression and prevention of progression
- Coordination of care to manage impacting comorbidities
Our goal is to achieve disease control, reduce pain, improve function, and restore quality of life.
