Dr. Patricio Colmegna is a Control Engineer by formation, and his research interests include modeling, optimization, and control of mechanical and biomedical processes.
Since Dr. Colmegna started his doctorate studies, he has been working on technology-based solutions to improve glucose control in type 1 diabetes. Dr. Colmegna initially focused his research on designing closed-loop controllers, a.k.a. artificial pancreas systems, that automatically regulate the blood glucose level while minimizing patient intervention. More recently, he has started analyzing and designing clinical decision support systems that optimize self-management practices. In this initial effort, Dr. Colmegna designed, implemented and clinically tested a cloud-based, centralized platform, a.k.a. the Web-Based Simulation Tool, that enables unique patient-data interactions, facilitating the decision-making process of insulin therapy optimization.
Dr. Colmegna also has experience in designing, implementing, and experimentally validating closed-loop solutions to mechanical ventilators, active magnetic bearings, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
