Richardson Day of Caring happens every September when teams of people volunteer to complete special projects at regional nonprofits, schools, and faith-based organizations. The first Day of Caring took place in 1992 and began with only 50 volunteers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedwaycville.org\">United Way of Greater Charlottesville<\/a> services surrounding counties including <span class=\"TextRun SCXP235559887 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXP235559887 BCX0\">Charlottesville,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXP235559887 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXP235559887 BCX0\">Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXP235559887 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXP235559887 BCX0\">Nelson, and Greene. This year&#8217;s impact is estimated to include over 115 projects, over 1,700 volunteers, over 7,500 hours of service, and more than a $250,00 value back to the community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3331\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/diabetes-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/265\/2023\/09\/Screen-Shot-2023-09-21-at-3.54.10-PM-300x119.png\" alt=\"Botanical garden logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/diabetes-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/265\/2023\/09\/Screen-Shot-2023-09-21-at-3.54.10-PM-300x119.png 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/diabetes-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/265\/2023\/09\/Screen-Shot-2023-09-21-at-3.54.10-PM-503x200.png 503w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/diabetes-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/265\/2023\/09\/Screen-Shot-2023-09-21-at-3.54.10-PM.png 734w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This year, the UVA Center for Diabetes Technology participated at the <a href=\"https:\/\/piedmontgarden.org\">Botanical Garden of the Piedmont<\/a>. The CDT volunteers joined more than 50 others to tackle projects at the Garden. Today, they helped pick up sticks, mulch paths, and remove invasive plant species. Some of the species that affect the Garden are the <em>Japanese Honeysuckle, Japanese Stiltgrass, Chinese Privet, <\/em>and<em> Asiatic Bittersweet<\/em>. Where we celebrated community service and fueled up for the day with breakfast and coffee. They also announced the\u00a02023 Caring for Community\u00a0Honorees and the Volunteer of the Year Honoree. UVA President, Jim Ryan, joined us at the Botanical Garden this morning.
