The Department of Medicine is at the forefront of medical education, patient care and biomedical research at UVA School of Medicine.\u00a0<\/strong>We are the largest academic department at the University of Virginia, encompassing ten subspecialty divisions, a thriving education program that trains 100 residents and 90 fellows each year, almost 300 clinical and research faculty members, and a\u00a0staff of over 250.<\/span><\/p>\n

The DOM community<\/span> of faculty,\u00a0fellows, residents, researchers and staff\u00a0do extraordinary work everyday: caring for patients, teaching medical students, graduate and postgraduate trainees, conducting basic and clinical research — and providing the infrastructure to support all this activity.<\/p>\n

The work of the Department of Medicine is essential in shaping the next generation of physicians, medical researchers\u00a0and healthcare leaders, at UVA and beyond. Your gift can help support our\u00a0vital mission.<\/span><\/p>\n

Faculty Support:
\nProvide funding to recruit and retain the best medical faculty<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Department of Medicine seeks funding for endowed professorships to recruit outstanding faculty in internal medicine and its related disciplines: allergy, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology\/hepatology, geriatrics, infectious diseases, nephrology, palliative care,\u00a0and pulmonary and critical care medicine.\u00a0Endowed chairs help UVA compete with other universities for exceptional faculty, and recognize and reward professors who are leaders in research or teaching. The need for faculty support is particularly acute given the growing shortages of physicians nationwide — particularly in internal and general medicine —\u00a0and the intense competition to attract top-notch faculty\u00a0in\u00a0these fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinical and Basic Research:
\nSupport the search for new cures and treatments of diseases<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

Gifts to the Department of Medicine to support research, particularly seed funding, will help the department open doors to innovative new therapies and cures. Federal and state grant funding is highly competitive and has declined significantly over the past decade; research support fosters innovation that makes government funding more likely down the road. The department\u2019s clinical research priorities include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hematology and oncology.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Graduate Education:
\nSupport the Internal Medicine Residency Program<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

The department’s three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program, which admits approximately 30 MDs each year, has a long tradition of developing physicians of the highest caliber who excel in all aspects of research and patient care.\u00a0As\u00a0one of the top internal medicine residency programs in the nation, it attracts a large number of highly competitive applicants from across the country. To keep the residency\u00a0program strong, funding is needed to support\u00a0scholarships, mentoring programs\u00a0and innovative new models for clinical training.<\/span><\/p>\n
