Latinos are the largest minority group in the country and among the most underserved minorities in regards to access to care and health outcomes. We are hoping to narrow the gap between UVA and minority communities locally. Enhance cultural competency among UVA students and faculty. Institutional, faculty and student dedication to these groups may enhance diversity and inclusion in our institution.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty and students from the UVA Schools of Medicine and Nursing work in collaboration with the following University and Community organizations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Latino Medical Student Association, UVA<\/li>\n<li>Latinx Student Alliance, UVA<\/li>\n<li>Latino Community Health Workers Network<\/li>\n<li>Thomas Jefferson Health District<\/li>\n<li>Sin Barreras<\/li>\n<li>Creciendo Juntos<\/li>\n<li>The Women\u2019s Initiative<\/li>\n<li>The Charlottesville Free Clinic<\/li>\n<li>Albemarle School District<\/li>\n<li>Church of the Incarnation<\/li>\n<li>Southwood Community<\/li>\n<li>Habitat for Humanity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Latino Health I<\/b><b>n<\/b><b>itiative Projects<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cardiovascular Initiative for the Latino Community Health<\/li>\n<li>Compa\u00f1eros Training &amp; Empowerment Program (CTEP)<\/li>\n<li>La Cl\u00ednica Latina at the Charlottesville Free Clinic<\/li>\n<li>Engaging the Youth- The UVA School of Medicine and minority youth at the Albemarle Public Schols<\/li>\n<li>Spanish Health Column on Target Latino Magazine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/09\/Walton-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2017\/09\/Walton-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1399\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a>LHI and the Latino youth\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In collaboration with the Albemarle County Schools, UVA SOM Diversity Office, Internal Medicine Resident, LHI, LMSA and NMSA organized a visit to Walton Middle School AVID student group for a college empowering session for students with challenging paths.<\/li>\n<li>Model session has been developed for future visits to other schools.<\/li>\n<li>Medical students and residents of different ethnic background modeled the value of diversity and inter-ethnic collaboration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Latino Health Initiative (LHI) As physicians and other health care providers, our commitment to goes beyond the walls of clinics and hospitals.
