{"id":3695,"date":"2017-05-08T17:16:25","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T21:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/dom\/?p=3695"},"modified":"2017-05-08T17:28:10","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T21:28:10","slug":"dom-trainees-moss-and-holland-on-the-evolving-medical-complexity-of-the-modern-cardiac-intensive-care-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/dom\/2017\/05\/08\/dom-trainees-moss-and-holland-on-the-evolving-medical-complexity-of-the-modern-cardiac-intensive-care-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"DOM Trainees Moss and Holland on \u201cThe Evolving Medical Complexity of the Modern Cardiac Intensive Care Unit\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cardiovascular third-year fellow<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/cardiovascular-medicine\/faculty-and-fellows\/basic-fellows\/\">Travis Moss, MD<\/a><\/strong>, and second-year internal medicine resident<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/internal-medicine-residency\/resident-life\/resident-roster\/\">Eric Holland, MD<\/a><\/strong>, published a paper in the April 25th issue of the\u00a0<em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that has important implications for how Cardiac Intensive Care Units are staffed and run.<\/p>\n<p>Holland and Moss examined 1,042 admissions to UVA Hospital\u2019s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) over a 13-month period, performing multivariate statistical analyses to determine the association of acute noncardiovascular illnesses with outcomes such as length of stay, hospital readmission and mortality. They found that one-half of all cases were marked by physiological failure of noncardiac organs (particularly lungs and kidneys), the most common diagnoses being acute respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, and sepsis.
