Blue Ridge Poison Center: The Claudius Project & AI

March 23, 2026 by sd2cv@virginia.edu

“We do know that the internet and AI, and I’ve done research on this too, is not a good source for information,” [Dr. Christopher] Holstege said.

Instead, Holstege said people should call (800) 222-1222.

“Most of the work can be done through our specialists and poison information and getting that information back out to the caller as to what to do next,” Holstege said. “It’s free. It’s confidential. And I think really important for the public to use as opposed to looking at AI.”

UVA Blue Ridge Poison Center is staffed with medical toxicologists as well as other specialty staff. Through free resources, they are providing valuable information to Virginia and beyond. Most recently, they published the third reference booklet in their guide series; this one, The Claudius Project, focuses on poisonous mushrooms. This guide is available as a PDF download and as a physical copy. In addition to this publication, they have put out guides on poisonous plants and animals.

The poison center has also been taking a look at the role of AI in prehospital medical care. Due to inaccuracies, they are still encouraging those with concerns to call in for a free consultation. The center’s specialists can consult on contraindications with medications, accidental poisonings, and new products on the market. Their research delves into the dangers behind unregulated products, such as over the counter and illegal substances.
