Research Description
My research interests include investigating the various mechanisms responsible for insulin resistance in humans with and without diabetes. I am interested in the diurnal pattern of insulin action and insulin secretion in individuals with type 2 diabetes. We are also looking at the mechanisms by which cortisol plays a role in NAFLD/NASH. Recent studies that we conducted have shown that the splanchnic bed makes cortisol in humans via the enzyme 11-betahydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1, and we are now studying whether inhibition of this enzyme reduces hepatic cortisol production and thereby reduces hepatic fat. My research interests also include optimizing management of patients with type 1 diabetes. Our lab has had a long history of continuous successful grants(federal, foundation and industry). We study the pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases using state of the art organ catheterization techniques coupled with isotope dilution methods. The group also work in sensor technology and finding refinements to improve upon the artificial pancreas for type 1 diabetes. Coupled with research we are also carrying out various projects with the Virginia Department of Health to improve care of patients with diabetes in Virginia. Expanding our research to include Telemedicine is a priority. We also carry out technology driven educational activities to expand knowledge of sensor and other diabetes technology to groups in various countries within and outside US.
