These services are available for approved clinical protocols and some services are available to the community.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Virginia Health System\u2019s Exercise Physiology Core Laboratory (EPCL) was established in 1990 as part of the National Institutes of Health sponsored General Clinical Research Center to promote the expansion and enhancement of clinical research that incorporates exercise physiology and body composition into either the research questions or the research design.\u00a0 Over the years, we have added measures of resting and exercise oxygen consumption, lactate threshold assessment, endothelial function, regional distribution of body fat,\u00a0 body composition assessment via whole body air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD), dual channel bioimpedance, \u00a0anthropometry including diameters, circumferences, and skinfolds and the use of acute exercise\u00a0 and\/or exercise training as an intervention.<\/p>\n<p>The EPCL is now part of the UVA School of Medicine Research Cores and provides its services\u00a0 to all researchers at UVA.\u00a0 In addition, the EPCL offers some services to the community including fitness testing on the treadmill or cycle ergometer and body composition measurements using the BOD POD.<\/p>\n<p>The EPCL is directed by Arthur Weltman, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Professor of Medicine. \u00a0The EPCL is staffed by Lisa Farr, M.Ed, R.C.E.P,\u00a0 laboratory manager and Courtney Paxton, M.S.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers should acknowledge use of the EPCL and support by the School of Medicine e.g.<br \/>\n&#8220;This work used (<i>service and\/or instrument name<\/i>) in the Exercise Physiology Core which is supported by the University of Virginia School of Medicine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The core has a <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/core-facilities\/cores-2\/exercise-physiology-research-resource-description\/\">resource statement<\/a> for use in grant proposals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uvaexlab\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-756\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"57\" height=\"57\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download.png 225w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download-110x110.png 110w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download-70x70.png 70w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/exercise-physiology-core-laboratory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2018\/11\/download-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 57px) 100vw, 57px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Exercise Physiology Core Laboratory measures metabolic and hemodynamic responses to exercise and provides measures of body composition.
