Seventh UVa School of Medicine Medical Education Poster Session<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Medical Education Research Subcommittee of the Academy of Distinguished Educators (ADE) held the seventh annual Medical Education Poster Session at the University of Virginia School of Medicine on March 7-11, 2011, in front of the Health Sciences Library. \u00a0This was the 4th<\/sup> year that poster abstracts were accepted in two categories: 1) medical education research and 2) innovations in medical education.\u00a0 Twenty-six abstracts were submitted; all 26 were accepted for presentation. There were 16 abstracts on research related to undergraduate medical education (UME), 11 abstracts on research related to graduate medical education (GME), 3 abstracts related to continuing medical education (CME) and 1 other category of abstract.\u00a0 Simulation was the topic represented by the most abstracts this year, although many other topics were represented.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s poster session was part of a more inclusive Medical Education Week of activities.\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. Bonnie Miller, Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine was the special invited guest and the 2nd<\/sup> recipient of the Anne L. Brodie Medical Education Scholar Award.\u00a0 As a part of this award, Dr. Miller visited UVa SoM for two days and met with many groups at the School of Medicine in addition to presenting the Medical Center Hour talk on March 9th<\/sup> on the subject of \u201cMoral Distress in Health Professionals \u2013 A Call for Resilience of Retreat\u201d. Dr. Miller has done research on and has published on the topic of moral distress in medical students (Wiggleton et al. 2010 Medical Students\u2019 Experiences of Moral Distress: Development of a Wed-Based Survey. Academic Medicine 85:111-117). \u00a0The annual ADE social event was held on that same Wednesday evening, March 9th<\/sup>, to honor Dr. Miller as well as all of the UVa faculty, residents and students involved in medical education research and curriculum innovation; both Dean Randy Canterbury \u00a0and Dr. Miller made remarks about medical education.<\/p>\n

The goals of the reception and the poster session were to highlight the medical education research currently being conducted at the School of Medicine and to increase interest in medical education research among the faculty by highlighting examples of good medical education research as well as innovations in medical education and by publicizing the Faculty Development Session dealing with medical education research in preparation for the 8th<\/sup> round of ADE medical education research grants (to be awarded in June of 2011).<\/p>\n

The poster session and reception were organized by Bob Bloodgood on behalf of the Academy of Distinguished Educators, with assistance from Elizabeth Graham, Ashley Ayers, Gretchen Arnold and Wilma Lynch. \u00a0Dr. Eugene Corbett coordinated the activities associated with the Anne L. Brodie Medical Education Award.<\/p>\n
