Dr. Bilchick, a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist, has adopted an integrated approach to clinical research involving the fields of clinical cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, and heart failure. His lab is pursuing four main areas of research, with the central goal improving outcomes for patients with, or at risk for, cardiac arrhythmias, particularly those with structural heart disease and\/or heart failure. A Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health (K23) is focused on the use of cardiac magnetic resonance and advanced echocardiography to improve outcomes for patients with heart failure who are candidates for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). His lab is also conducting clinical and translational studies to elucidate the cardiac mechanics underlying dyssynchronous heart failure, mycardial infarction in heart failure, right ventricular dysfunction, and diffuse cardiac fibrosis. Another area of research is aimed at discovering key genetic and molecular mechanisms associated with mechanical dyssynchrony and CRT response. And finally, his lab performs large database research to measure and evaluate the clinical benefits of heart rhythm therapies, such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators and CRT devices.
