{"id":1730454,"date":"2025-06-17T11:12:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T15:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/faculty\/faculty-listing\/gsb4g\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T14:33:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T18:33:32","slug":"gsb4g","status":"publish","type":"faculty-listing","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/faculty\/faculty-listing\/gsb4g\/","title":{"rendered":"Bloom, George S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research in our laboratory is now focused primarily on Alzheimer\u2019s disease (AD), the most common form of a group of neurodegenerative disorders known collectively as tauopathies. The histopathological hallmark of AD is the presence in brain of extracellular plaques of amyloid-\u03b2 (A\u03b2) peptide fibrils, and intraneuronal neurofibrillary tangles, which are filaments composed of the protein, tau, and are found in all tauopathies. Despite the conspicuous appearance of plaques and tangles, a growing body of evidence points to their building blocks, A\u03b2 and tau oligomers, as being the toxic molecular species that cause AD. For example, we have found that tau expression is required for several adverse effects of A\u03b2 oligomers on neurons, including microtubules loss, ectopic re-rentry into the cell cycle, cytotoxicity and impaired mitochondrial activity.
