The focus of research in our experimental laboratory is noninvasive molecular imaging in the cardiovascular system using targeted radioisotopes. One of the unique strengths of our laboratory is the wide array of novel radiotracers that we have available through our own development efforts, as well as those obtained through collaborations with radiochemists and biotech companies. These tracers can be used to characterize and measure biological processes in living animals at the cellular and molecular level using a conventional clinical SPECT or PET camera. Using this instrumentation and these targeted tracers, we can measure perfusion (i.e. blood flow), inflammation (white blood cell localization), or metabolism in the heart and lungs as well as a number of other physiologic and functional parameters. Quantitative techniques allow us to measure and follow these processes over time and can be used to determine the efficacy of a particular therapy.
