{"id":1730873,"date":"2025-06-17T11:16:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T15:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/faculty\/faculty-listing\/xjv8bn\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T15:27:56","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T19:27:56","slug":"xjv8bn","status":"publish","type":"faculty-listing","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/faculty\/faculty-listing\/xjv8bn\/","title":{"rendered":"Lu, Tsai-Yi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs, or NG2 glia) comprise the largest pool of progenitor cells in the brain and continuously generate myelin-producing oligodendrocytes throughout our life until aging onset. However, how OPCs decide to commit to differentiating into oligodendrocytes and the mechanisms mediating their continual renewal have not been fully understood. My laboratory recently discovered that neurotransmitters released from neurons modulate OPC fate choices, suggesting that neuron-OPC communications play a role in myelin homeostasis, which is foundational to neuronal health and function.
