We explore the role of myeloid cell recruitment into the central nervous system after subarachnoid hemorrhage and to determine which effector molecules in neutrophils and monocytes are responsible for the brain damage associated with delayed cerebral deterioration. Using a novel murine model of mild subarachnoid hemorrhage that allows evaluation of late cognitive effects, we have been able to show that systemic neutrophils play a role in impaired long term potentiation and memory function after SAH. We therefore have recently focused our attention on elucidating changes to the hippocampal memory mechanism after SAH.
