{"id":1731117,"date":"2025-06-17T11:18:44","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T15:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/faculty\/faculty-listing\/jrs7r\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T15:17:38","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T19:17:38","slug":"jrs7r","status":"publish","type":"faculty-listing","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/faculty\/faculty-listing\/jrs7r\/","title":{"rendered":"Stone, James Radford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in the combat environment is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in recent armed conflicts. Dr. Stone\u2019s laboratory currently explores questions related to improving the clinical diagnosis of this disease process in both preclinical models and human subjects. Ongoing preclinical work includes the design and investigation of molecular imaging probes for the detection of acute and chronic effects of TBI. Probes under investigation include those targeting inflammation, caspase-3 activity, and apoptosis. He is also involved with exploring novel ultrasound based approaches for the detection of TBI in a far forward environment. Further, he is involved work exploring neurovascular changes in a preclinical blast TBI model. Human subjects work focuses upon exploring neuroimaging correlates of repetitive low-level blast exposure in military populations. The goals of this work include determining whether military service members in this environment are at risk for development of mild TBI and helping to establish safe stand off limits for low-level blast exposure. Additionally, Dr. Stone is involved with efforts exploring optimization of computational neuroimaging tools for assessment of TBI.
