{"id":1862,"date":"2020-05-04T09:26:04","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T13:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/flow-cytometry-facility\/?page_id=1862"},"modified":"2025-08-29T11:42:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T15:42:30","slug":"flow-cytometry-core-facility-training-course-introductory-flow-cytometry","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/flow-cytometry-facility\/flow-cytometry-training-courses\/flow-cytometry-core-facility-training-course-introductory-flow-cytometry\/","title":{"rendered":"Introductory to Flow Cytometry Training Course Description"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-sm-last col-md-8 col-md-first entry-content\">\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"\">\n<h5>Lecture topics will include:<\/h5>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Basic concepts of flow cytometry, its complementary technologies, and common applications<\/li>\n<li>The components of a flow cytometer and how do they work<\/li>\n<li>Fluorescence labeling, spectrum, and compensation<\/li>\n<li>Critical aspects of experimental design<\/li>\n<li>Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures<\/li>\n<li>Data analysis, interpretation, and presentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Lab will include (using calibration particles and fully stained samples):<\/h5>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>A tour of the instrumentation and all of its components<\/li>\n<li>An introduction to SpectroFlo and Cellquest Pro software for data acquisition and analysis<\/li>\n<li>Instrument set up, instrument settings for data acquisition and storage<\/li>\n<li>Multicolor experiment exercise: design, sample prep (wet lab), data acquisition (hardware compensation and software compensation), and data analysis<\/li>\n<li>Instrument calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Hands-on data analysis with\u00a0FCS Express software<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Who should attend?<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Those who wish to run their own samples on a flow cytometer<\/li>\n<li>Those who already run a flow cytometer but wish to have a better understanding of the technology and the data that is produced<\/li>\n<li>Those who plan to use flow cytometry in the future<\/li>\n<li>Those who design experiments and review\/interpret flow cytometry data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Core facility will offer the course on a quarterly basis. The lecture part is limited to 10 people per class; the lab part is limited to 8 people per class, who are divided into two session groups (with 2 lab instructors per session group, i.e., 2 people per instructor per lab session). The schedule of upcoming classes are updated on FCCF <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/flow-cytometry-facility\/\">home page<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lecture locations will be announced by class date. Labs will be held at the FCCF, Room 2011, Pinn Hall.<\/p>\n<h4>COST:<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"none\">\n<li>Lecture only \u00a0\u2013 $388.14\/pp<\/li>\n<li>Lecture and Lab \u2013 $550.00\/pp<\/li>\n<li>Applicants from outside UVa are charged a 62% surcharge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>\u00a0<u>All fees include:<\/u><\/h5>\n<div>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Training Manual<\/li>\n<li>A certificate of satisfactory completion<\/li>\n<li>Coupon for two hours of free assisted or unassisted analytical services (UVa applicants only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>REGISTER:<\/h4>\n<p>Interested individuals should complete the application in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uva.corefacilities.org\/\">iLab<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at least two weeks in advance of the date requested. Classes fill quickly, so please inquire and apply early.
