I was born in Madison, NJ and grew up in Lynchburg, VA.<\/p>\n<p>I pursued my love of sciences and languages at Washington and Lee University where I majored in Biochemistry and Romance Languages.\u00a0 A medical sociology course at W&amp;L opened my eyes to the importance of preventive medicine and engaging community resources in order to ultimately improve health outcomes. While in college, my experiences volunteering at the Free Clinic of Central VA and the Rockbridge Area Health Center reinforced my belief in the importance of primary care, and helped me form an image of the community doctor I would like to become.<\/p>\n<p>This past year, I greatly enjoyed working as a scribe in the Emergency Department at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.\u00a0 I learned a great deal from the attending physicians, residents, and physician assistants in the ED, however I know I ultimately desire a career in medicine that allows for long-term relationships with patients, and being able to follow multiple aspects of their care.\u00a0 I am incredibly excited to join the Generalist Scholars program at UVA, and plan to pursue a career in Family Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, running, listening to French podcasts, and baking pumpkin brownies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello!\u00a0 My name is Haley Smith.
