{"id":4806,"date":"2022-03-04T01:48:19","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T06:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/cphg\/?p=4806"},"modified":"2026-05-22T16:24:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T20:24:23","slug":"mete-civelek-and-qianyi-yang-lead-lab-in-new-discovery-on-how-womens-bodies-store-fat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/genome-sciences\/2022\/03\/04\/mete-civelek-and-qianyi-yang-lead-lab-in-new-discovery-on-how-womens-bodies-store-fat\/","title":{"rendered":"Mete Civelek and Qianyi Yang Lead Lab in New Discovery on How Women&#8217;s Bodies Store Fat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"processed\">School of Medicine researchers at the University of Virginia have identified a potential way to battle the health effects of obesity and Type 2 diabetes in women after discovering an important factor that could determine how their bodies use and store fat.<\/p>\n<p>Based on their new discovery, the researchers, led by <strong>Mete Civelek<\/strong>, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, were able to change whether female lab mice\u2019s bodies stored fat subcutaneously (under the skin) or viscerally (wrapped around the organs).<\/p>\n<p>While visceral fat goes unseen, hidden deep inside the body, it can be particularly harmful to good health.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers say their results in mice suggest that a similar approach could help treat the effects of obesity and battle metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, in women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a strong need for targeted therapies against metabolic abnormalities caused by obesity and diabetes,\u201d said the study\u2019s first author, <strong>Qianyi Yang<\/strong> of UVA\u2019s <strong>Center for Public Health Genomics<\/strong>. \u201cWe hope that increasing KLF14 abundance in fat cells of females with obesity and diabetes may provide a novel treatment option to alleviate these metabolic abnormalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read the full UVA Today article <a href=\"https:\/\/news.virginia.edu\/content\/women-struggling-obesity-or-diabetes-uva-discovery-may-help?utm_source=DailyReport&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=news\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Medicine researchers at the University of Virginia have identified a potential way to battle the health effects of obesity and Type 2 diabetes in women after discovering an important factor that could determine how their bodies use and store fat.
