{"id":5069,"date":"2023-02-01T16:49:08","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T21:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/cphg\/?p=5069"},"modified":"2023-02-21T16:55:04","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T21:55:04","slug":"cphgs-own-stephen-s-rich-director-emeritus-receives-the-2022-uva-distinguished-researcher-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/genome-sciences\/2023\/02\/01\/cphgs-own-stephen-s-rich-director-emeritus-receives-the-2022-uva-distinguished-researcher-award\/","title":{"rendered":"CPHG&#8217;s Own Stephen S Rich, Director Emeritus, Receives the 2022 UVA Distinguished Researcher Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Virginia honored faculty members across Grounds for their outstanding research and scholarship on Tuesday at the fourth annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.virginia.edu\/initiatives\/research-achievement-awards\"><strong>Research Achievement Awards<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0held at The Pavilion at the Boar\u2019s Head Resort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are glad to gather in person again to celebrate the achievements of our faculty in research, collaboration, mentorship and public-impact focused research,\u201d Melur \u201cRam\u201d Ramasubramanian, UVA\u2019s vice president for research, said.<\/p>\n<p>The research highlighted at the ceremony reveals the vast scope of work underway at UVA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe faculty honored during the awards ceremony have advanced knowledge in topics ranging from <strong>Type 1 diabetes<\/strong> and adolescent health to indigenous history and the Milky Way,\u201d Ian Baucom, executive vice president and provost, said. \u201cTheir work shows the outstanding depth and breadth of research at UVA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Devin Harris, professor and chair\u200b of the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment\u200b in the School of Engineering and Applied Science,\u200b delivered the keynote address, \u201cBuilt to Last:\u200b The Evolving Role of Infrastructure in our Society \u200b\u2026 the Silent Partner in our Success.\u201d A civil engineer, his research is in built environments, or the physical places where people live and interact, such as homes, office buildings and streets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s awardees are an incredibly talented group of faculty who are working every day to advance the frontiers of knowledge and human progress, and it was a pleasure to recognize their achievements in this way,\u201d UVA President Jim Ryan said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful for their efforts and excited about what\u2019s next for research at UVA, across disciplines, schools, and areas of study.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2022 UVA Research Achievement Award winners\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YX9x-eL-dpo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>Distinguished Researcher Award: Stephen S. Rich, School of Medicine<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"align-left\" role=\"group\">\n<article>\n<div class=\"media media-element-container media-default\">\n<div class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg\">\n<div class=\"content file-default\"><span class=\"caption none media-element file-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/news.virginia.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Inline_06_Left_Stephen_Rich_TC.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Stephen Rich\" width=\"600\" height=\"840\" \/><\/span>(Photo by Tom Cogill)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rich, Harrison Professor of Public Health Science and director emeritus of the Center for Public Health Genomics, is a leader in the field of human genetics and has made groundbreaking and impactful contributions to the understanding of the genetics of Type I diabetes and many other complex diseases. He has published more than 700 manuscripts, including many in the journals Nature, Science and Cell.<\/p>\n<p>He and his team are responsible for uncovering sources that explain nearly all the genetic risk for Type 1 diabetes, and these discoveries are transforming its prevention and treatment. Rich has led numerous national and international genetics consortia, served on the advisory board of the National Human Genome Research Institute and founded the Center for Public Health Genomics at UVA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteve is a most generous scientist, a valued colleague, and ultimate team player.
