The aim is to prepare students for careers in genomics research or additional advanced studies in the field, such as a doctoral program, as they pursue an M.S. in data science.<\/p>\n<p>The effort was made possible following an award from the National Institutes of Health and will support three students per cohort in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.virginia.edu\/degrees\/msds-residential\">residential data science master\u2019s program<\/a>, beginning in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The new coursework will leverage the School\u2019s long-running capstone projects where students work with an external organization to tackle a data science challenge. The REGARDS program will provide opportunities for students to gain valuable research experience in UVA genomics labs.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the School of Data Science will develop new courses in genomics data science as well as modify existing offerings to include more genomics examples and lab exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Genomic data analysis is a critical need in biomedical, behavior, and clinical research communities, with the potential to improve disease diagnosis and surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this new initiative, the School of Data Science will recruit candidates from groups historically underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.virginia.edu\/oei\">a reflection of the School\u2019s commitment to expanding access to data science careers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More information about the program and how to apply will be available on the School of Data Science website this fall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.virginia.edu\/news\/data-science-masters-program-add-genomics-coursework\">Link to Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Data Science will support three students per master&#8217;s cohort as they complete coursework in genomics data science.
