Adipose tissue in health and disease\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Recent attention has been given to the ability of adipose to\u00a0function as endocrine organ via secretion of adipokines and cytokines. But at the most basic level adipose tissue has two major functions;<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Take up fatty acids and glucose to store as triglycerides as the body\u2019s energy reserves (Anabolic<\/b><\/u> signaling in response to insulin).<\/li>\n
  2. Release fatty acids and glycerol through lipolysis for energy use\u00a0 when nutrients are low (Catabolic<\/b><\/u> signaling in response to catecholamines, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These signaling events do not occur in isolation. Adipose tissue has an important role in responding to anabolic and catabolic signals to regulate WHOLE <\/b>BODY <\/b>metabolic homeostasis.<\/p>\n

    Overall,\u00a0our conviction is\u00a0that derangements in these anabolic and catabolic processes underlie many aspects of obesity-induced pathophysiology.<\/p>\n
