But at the most basic level adipose tissue has two major functions;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take up fatty acids and glucose to store as triglycerides as the body\u2019s energy reserves (<u><b>Anabolic<\/b><\/u> signaling in response to insulin).<\/li>\n<li>Release fatty acids and glycerol through lipolysis for energy use\u00a0 when nutrients are low (<u><b>Catabolic<\/b><\/u> signaling in response to catecholamines, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These signaling events do not occur in isolation.
