The Hospitalist Track at UVA is a relatively new track within the Internal Medicine residency program and was established in 2016 in response to the growing and evolving role of hospital medicine around the country. Hospitalists now are tasked with taking on new roles in hospital administration, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, co-management with surgical subspecialties, and medical education. The goal of the track is to provide residents with supplemental training and mentorship to prepare them for a career in hospital medicine with a focus especially on the unique administrative and QI roles of hospitalists. The track is open to one to two rising second year residents and offers hospital medicine specific electives which focus on perioperative medicine, orthopedic co-management, general medicine consults, as well as time spent working one on one with a hospitalist to experience their unique perspectives. Residents are encouraged to work on a research project throughout their time in the track with support to present at a national conference during their third year. Members of the track will have opportunities to spend time with members of the hospitalist group at UVA for career guidance and ongoing mentorship throughout the track.
