The Hospitalist Track at UVA is a relatively new track within the Internal Medicine residency program and was established in 2016 in response to the growing and evolving role of hospital medicine around the country. Hospitalists are tasked with taking on roles in hospital administration, quality improvement (QI) and patient safety initiatives, co-management with surgical subspecialties, and medical education. The goal of the track is to provide residents with supplemental training and mentorship to prepare them for a career in hospital medicine. The track is open to up to three rising second year residents who will continue participation in their third year. The track offers hospital medicine specific electives which focus on perioperative medicine, orthopedic co-management, general medicine consults, as well as time spent working one-on-one with a hospitalist for experiential learning. Residents will participate in a quality improvement project with support to present at a national conference during their third year. Residents will be paired with one of the co-leaders for one-on-one career guidance and mentorship.
