Clinical Opportunities<\/h3>\n

Clinically, we care for our patients within a number of locations both in and around the University. Since 2002, The\u00a0Department of Family Medicine\u2019s International Family Medicine Clinic<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has worked in conjunction with the International Refugee Committee to provide healthcare in a culturally sensitive environment as a first contact with this population. The\u00a0Charlottesville Free Clinic<\/strong><\/a>, established in 1992 by two medical residents, Mohan Nadkarni and Paul DeMarko,\u00a0is a clinic that now serves\u00a0low income and uninsured individuals. Staffed by volunteer medical students, residents, university and community physicians, nurses and pharmacists, it offers myriad services ranging from free dentistry to primary and subspecialty care, with an on-site pharmacy which offers free medications. The\u00a0Remote Area Medicine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0experience is an opportunity offered to students in the summer and\u00a0fall. Students work side by side with residents and clinicians providing free evaluation, treatment and screening services such as mammography as\u00a0well as Optometry and Dentistry to individuals in Southwest Virginia (Wise and Grundy Counties). Approximately 1,000 patients are cared for over 2 day period.\u00a0Our<\/strong>\u00a0Center for Telemedicine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0affords continuity of care and outreach website for telemedicine. This is a multi-level telehealth resource center for the Mid-Atlantic region serving Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. Our course\u00a0Social Issues in Medicine (SIM<\/strong>) <\/strong>requires 30 hours of community activity for all medical students during the first year of class. This is one of the ways that students are introduced to issues such as healthcare disparities and vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n

Research Opportunities<\/h3>\n

Research Opportunities Abound \u2013 Approximately (70%) of our students elect to do research their first summer. Some choose to go to the NIH, others remain at UVA or travel abroad. A central clearinghouse at UVA links researchers to students.<\/p>\n

In the summer of 2009, The\u00a0Carter Harrison Research Building<\/a><\/strong>, with 102,000 square feet of research space opened its doors. It is devoted to vaccine therapy, immunology, infectious diseases, and cancer. The new building houses 60 lead researchers and 240 of their colleagues in biomedical research focused on improving treatments for patients.<\/p>\n

Two research parks are located close to campus.\u00a0Northfork Research Park<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is home to UVA\u2019s Center for\u00a0Addiction Research and Education (UVA CARE)<\/a><\/strong>, while\u00a0Fontaine Research Park houses state-of-the-art imaging for research and clinical care.\u00a0The Center for Global Health<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0offers research and clinical opportunities abroad; the International Studies Office can help students with opportunities abroad.<\/p>\n

Inova Research Opportunities<\/h3>\n

Across from the flagship hospital at Inova Fairfax is a 117 acre research park currently being built in partnership with UVA School of Medicine.\u00a0 This partnership will develop<\/p>\n
