NBME Subject Exam Computing

SOM students take the National Boards of Medical Examiners (NBME) “shelf exams” during their 3rd year and you will be expected to use your own laptop computer (no netbooks, tablets, or mobile devices). Per NBME requirements, your laptop should meet the following minimum specifications:

  • 13″ screen or larger, minimum screen resolution of 1028X768, 32 bit color
  • Windows 7, 8, 10; Mac OSX 10.8 or higher (virtual machines are NOT allowed)
  • Screen capture & recording functions must be disabled (information below).

Despite the stated 13″ screen requirement, we have had several students who were successful using 12″ Surface devices.

How to certify your laptop for the exam

Information on certifying (testing) your laptop for the NBME Subject Exams is here

Having problems certifying your laptop for the exam?

Should your laptop fail certification, you likely have a screen capture feature that needs to be disabled. Please see the common problems page here

If you are unable to resolve it, please contact one of the Med Ed Technology staff members to help you. It is best to do so via email to mededweb@virginia.edu or stopping by the offices in the Learning Studio or Auditorium.

The Med Ed Technology department does have a limited number of loaner laptops that you can checkout for the exam. Please reserve one using this form
