MobileIron is a Mobile Device Manger (MDM) and form of Virtual Private Network (VPN) that can be installed on smartphones and tablets to facilitate access to Health System Technology Services (HIT) email and some clinical applications (EPIC and PACS). An additional benefit to installing MobileIron on your mobile device comes from the automatic connection to the UVA WiFi network (hscs-wireless) in clinical areas like the hospital and clinics.

MobileIron – To be considered

Using a Mobile Device Manager (MDM) like MobileIron does adjust some security settings and imposes some constraints on your phone/tablet that you should be aware of:
  • You will be required to have a passcode with a timeout for inactivity on your device.
  • Your passcode will need to change as your health system credentials age – every 60 days.
  • The data on your device will be encrypted
  • The MDM will be allowed to purge your device of Health System/Medical Center data (not your personal data, contacts, etc.). This is only done in isolated cases as needed – loss/theft of the device, withdrew from medical school, etc.)
  • You will need to turn on Location Services on your mobile device.
More information on MobileIron as a MDM can be found here (HSTS credentials required) –

Requesting MobileIron

During orientation, MobileIron is requested by all SOM students. Should you need to make another request (lost/change in device, re-install, etc.), students can initiate this process by signing a “Mobile Device Agreement”.

  • Complete a Mobile Device Agreement which can be found here (HIT login credentials required):
  • You should receive an email from HIT with the most recent installation instructions.
  • Install the software on your mobile device.
  • If you have configured Mobile Iron successfully and still can’t connect to your newly configured health system email account, most likely your email account was incorrectly updated after you completed the mobile device agreement and you will need to contact the HIT help desk (see contact information below) to enable this feature for your account.
The installation does include additional HIT applications to facilitate connectivity to HIT resources like EPIC, PACS, f5 Edge Client, etc.

Notes for completing the Mobile Device Agreement:

  • User Information – most of this should be pre-filled for you from the health system directory. Use your health system email address – <> for delivery of the installation instructions.
  • Department – choose “School of Medicine”
  • Building – choose “Claude Moore Medical Education”.
  • Floor – choose the 3rd floor (location for the Student Affairs office)
  • Type of request – new agreement or additional device
  • Device type as appropriate – iPhone, iPad, Droid
  • Acknowledge that you have read and understand the agreement and the associated policies
