WiFi Access

WiFi in the academic buildings is administered by the university’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department and WiFi in the clinical buildings is administered by the Health System Technology Services (HSTS) department.

Academic Buildings

The encrypted “cavalier” network is preferred and a digital certificate is required to connect. Instructions for connecting to cavalier WiFi can be found on the http://its.virginia.edu/wireless/encrypted.html.

The unencrypted “wahoo” network does not broadcast its SSID, but is available to registered devices. Instructions for connecting to wahoo WiFi can be found on the http://its.virginia.edu/mobile/android.html.

Instructions for connecting a mobile device to the University of Virginia’s cavalier or wahoo wireless networks are available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry.

Clinical Buildings

The cavalier and wahoo networks are NOT available in clinical buildings. Instead, students can connect to the hscs-wireless, hscs-pda or hscs-guest networks.

The “hscs-wireless” WiFi network requires your health system (HSTS) credentials – userid & password. Given that you have system privileges, you should be able to access clinical systems like EPIC and PACS when connected to this WiFi network.

The “hscs-pda” WiFi network requires a password that changes periodically – contact the HSTS Help Desk via email (helpdesk@hscmail.mcc.virginia.edu) or phone (434-924-5334). When connected to this network, you will not be able to reach UVA clinical systems; but, internet access, reference systems, web sites and email will work.

The “hscs-guest” WiFi network is available in many clinical areas of the hospital and clinics. Once connected, you should be re-directed to a login page where you can put in your UVA userid and HSTS password. Connections are disconnected after a period of inactivity, so this WiFi network can be frustrating to use on a regular and ongoing basis.
