{"id":2443,"date":"2025-06-06T10:15:50","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T14:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/membrane-biology\/?p=2443"},"modified":"2026-05-22T16:57:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T20:57:40","slug":"seham-ebrahim-bechara-kachar-nih-and-michael-purdys-major-collaborative-breakthrough-powered-by-memc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/membrane-biology\/seham-ebrahim-bechara-kachar-nih-and-michael-purdys-major-collaborative-breakthrough-powered-by-memc\/","title":{"rendered":"Seham Ebrahim, Bechara Kachar (NIH), and Michael Purdy&#8217;s major collaborative breakthrough powered by MEMC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post-title\">New Organelle Discovered: UVA and NIH Researchers Identify \u2018Hemifusomes\u2019 as a Key to Cellular Recycling<\/p>\n<p>In a groundbreaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-59887-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study published in Nature Communications,<\/a> researchers from UVA&#8217;s Center for Membrane &amp; Cell Physiology and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have discovered a previously unknown cellular structure\u2014the hemifusome\u2014that could fundamentally reshape our understanding of how cells recycle their contents and sort and direct intracellular cargo.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was co-led by Seham Ebrahim, PhD, a CMCP resident faculty member, and assistant professor in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at UVA, and Bechara Kachar, MD, chief of the Laboratory of Cell Structure and Dynamics at the NIH\u2019s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
