{"id":1144,"date":"2017-05-23T13:17:48","date_gmt":"2017-05-23T17:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/?page_id=1144"},"modified":"2023-03-07T12:19:58","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T17:19:58","slug":"meet-the-educators","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/meet-the-educators\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Educators"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Our Clinical Faculty<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Are recognized as national leaders in the field of nephrology<\/li>\n<li>Maintain positions on editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals and on clinical practice guidelines committees for the NKF\/KDOQI and the Renal Physicians Association<\/li>\n<li>Are leaders in education and serve important national positions that determine education policy for nephrology education<\/li>\n<li>Author chapters in the most authoritative textbooks and educational materials available<\/li>\n<li>Have received distinguished awards at the University of Virginia including the Robley Dunglison Award, Department of Medicine Teaching Award, Dean&#8217;s Award for Excellence in Teaching, University Teaching Award, and are members of the UVA Academy of Distinguished Educators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/emaad-m-abdel-rahman\">Emaad Abdel-Rahman<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MBBS has clinical interests in\u00a0geriatric nephrology, hemodialysis and home dialysis.\u00a0 For the past two decades, he has been a favorite teacher for the fellows and also a great resource for junior faculty members.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/rasheed-balogun\">Rasheed Balogun<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MBBS is known internationally for his expertise in the area of therapeutic apheresis. He is the organizer for the annual international Therapeutic Apheresis Academy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/brendan-t-bowman\">Brendan Bowman<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD completed his residency and fellowship training here at UVA.\u00a0 He is heavily involved in fellows&#8217; education and is ranked among our top educators in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.\u00a0 He is currently the regional director of UVA dialysis operations.\u00a0 His interest and experience in the care of ESRD patients, quality improvement and the business operations of dialysis have made him a unique internal resource for our fellows.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/tushar-a-chopra\">Tushar Chopra<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD joined our faculty after completing fellowship training at Vanderbilt University.\u00a0 His main area of clinical interest is acute peritoneal dialysis.\u00a0 Within his short time at UVA he has quickly become one of our fellows\u2019 favorite educators.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/alden-m-doyle\">Alden Doyle<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD joined the UVA faculty from Drexel University in 2016.\u00a0 He was on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania for nearly a decade.\u00a0 He is currently the Medical Director of Kidney &amp; Pancreas Transplantation at UVA. He has twenty years of experience in immunology, international medicine and patient focused transplant care. He is considered one of the top educators by his trainees here at UVA and throughout his career elsewhere. He is the recipient of multiple awards for education excellence.\u00a0 \u00a0His areas of clinical interest include combined and sequential transplants, transplantation in HIV patients and kidney disease following organ transplantation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/uta-erdbruegger\">Uta Erdbruegger<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD joined the faculty after completion of her fellowship training at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.\u00a0 Her clinical interest is in rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.\u00a0 Her research involves the functional role of platelet and endothelial microvesicles in health and disease.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/sana-f-khan\">Sana Khan<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD completed her nephrology fellowship at UVA (residency at University of Cincinnati). Her area of clinical interest is peritoneal dialysis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/peter-i-lobo\">Peter Lobo<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD one of our transplant nephrologists, is one of our immunology experts.\u00a0 He is in charge of the HLA tissue typing laboratory at UVA.\u00a0 Fellows have enjoyed his outstanding teaching style and how he stimulates their critical thinking by asking probing questions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/angie-g-nishio-lucar\">Angie Nishio-Lucar<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD completed nephrology and transplant nephrology fellowships at UVA (residency at Henry Ford Hospital).\u00a0 Her clinical interest areas include non-infectious complications of renal transplantation, barriers to transplantation, obesity and transplantation, and living donation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/mark-d-okusa\">Mark Okusa<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD, our Division Chief, will be the ASN president in 2018.\u00a0 He is known internationally for his work in AKI. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Okusa has made fellow education a priority.\u00a0 He continues to attend the inpatient ICU and floor consult services and supervises fellows in their continuity clinic.\u00a0 Fellows have consistently ranked Dr. Okusa as one of their top educators.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/mitchell-h-rosner\">Mitchell Rosner<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD is the Chair of the UVA Department of Medicine.\u00a0 His main areas of interest include ADPKD, peritoneal dialysis, electrolyte disorders and onconephrology.\u00a0 He has been awarded numerous teaching awards, including the All-University Teaching Award.\u00a0 Dr. Rosner has been in charge of the ASN board review course for the past few years. \u00a0He attends the inpatient service, supervises fellows in their continuity, as well as home dialysis, clinics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/karen-m-warburton\">Karen Warburton<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, MD joined UVA faculty from University of Pennsylvania in 2016.\u00a0 She is a transplant nephrologist.\u00a0 Dr. Warburton has great deal of experience in medical education and is currently the director of Graduate Medical Education Professional Development in the Department of Medicine. She is a member of the ASN Workforce and Training Committee and one of the founders of the ASN Kidney STARs (students and residents at Kidney Week) program.
