{"id":202,"date":"2015-09-23T09:46:32","date_gmt":"2015-09-23T13:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/?page_id=202"},"modified":"2020-04-03T14:21:09","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T18:21:09","slug":"clinical-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/education\/clinical-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Training Pathway"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Clinical Curriculum: 2 Years<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The 24-month Clinical Curriculum consists of:<a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/226\/2015\/09\/UVa_Nephrology_e9628.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1314\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/226\/2015\/09\/UVa_Nephrology_e9628-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/226\/2015\/09\/UVa_Nephrology_e9628-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/226\/2015\/09\/UVa_Nephrology_e9628-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/226\/2015\/09\/UVa_Nephrology_e9628.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6 months of inpatient general nephrology consultation<\/li>\n<li>3 months of inpatient ICU consultation<\/li>\n<li>3 months of inpatient transplant nephrology consultation<\/li>\n<li>3 months of night float (1-week blocks)<\/li>\n<li>6 months of research and elective<\/li>\n<li>3 months of outpatient services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All inpatient care is provided at the main university hospital under the supervision of full-time UVA faculty.\u00a0 On any given day, 4 fellow trainees and 3 faculty members make rounds on our three inpatient consultation services (ICU, floor and transplant). The night float fellow is responsible for patient care at night. During elective months, fellows may receive additional training and experience in the areas of pediatric nephrology, renal histopathology, radiology, ultrasonography, urology, transplantation, interventional techniques, and hemodialysis vascular access. Fellow trainees are responsible for the longitudinal care of 6 \u2013 7 chronic outpatient hemodialysis patients at the in-campus hemodialysis unit. Trainees participate in the monthly outpatient multidisciplinary hemodialysis rounds.\u00a0 Fellows attend subspecialty onconephrology clinic and home dialysis during their outpatient months.<\/p>\n<p>Nephrology fellows at UVA perform native and transplant kidney biopsies using real-time ultrasound guidance under direct supervision of experienced nephrology faculty.\u00a0 Our fellows become competent in placing temporary hemodialysis catheters.\u00a0 They receive extensive exposure to all extracorporeal treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Each trainee is allowed 21 days of vacation each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Curriculum<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the clinical pathway, three to four months are devoted to research. Early in the course of their training, nephrology fellows are presented with a list of potential scholarly projects.\u00a0 Each fellow is asked to identify their chosen project by their third month of training.\u00a0 The progress of each fellow in their scholarly activities is monitored during periodic work-in-progress presentations attended by peers and faculty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Educational Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are conferences held throughout the week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Summer introductory lecture series<\/li>\n<li>Renal Grand Rounds<\/li>\n<li>Medical Grand Rounds<\/li>\n<li>Case conference<\/li>\n<li>Journal Club<\/li>\n<li>CIIR \u2013 Research-in-Progress<\/li>\n<li>Faculty minireviews<\/li>\n<li>Transplant Conference<\/li>\n<li>Fellows debates<\/li>\n<li>Renal Pathology Conference<\/li>\n<li>Morbidity and Mortality Conference<\/li>\n<li>Multidisciplinary Dialysis Access Conference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/nephrology\/fellowship-education\/conference-schedule\/\">Conference Schedule<\/a> for descriptions and more information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trainee Evaluation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have defined educational milestones in different areas of competency for different stages of fellowship training to guide us in monitoring the growth of each trainee.
