Dear Friends of UVA Ophthalmology,

Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD
Vernah Scott Moyston Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology
As I near the end of my first year as department chair, much remains new about the position and life in Charlottesville. Since this spring is my first here, the cherry blossoms which line many of the familiar streets around town and the emerging color on the foothills are strikingly new and beautiful. Much like the season of renewal we are enjoying with the weather, the department continues to progress and grow in many ways. We have multiple new faculty coming on board this summer, and our administrative and clinical spaces are undergoing much appreciated renovations.
While there is much newness to celebrate, we also are grateful for the established strengths which form our foundation. We give tribute to the pre-eminent career of Brian P. Conway, MD whose 47-year association with the department and three-decade tenure as chair laid the groundwork for our current and future successes. We also highlight our outstanding medical student program which educates UVA students in our field and supports the development of our future colleagues as they pursue an exciting career path in ophthalmology. Finally, we are delighted to draw special attention to our clinical research division, which is a truly rare resource among ophthalmology departments across the country in its ability to attract and execute cutting edge research protocols for our patients and faculty.
I hope you will enjoy reading these articles and gaining a clearer sense of our distinguished past as well as the promising future we are building together. This is truly an exciting time for the department, and we’d love to show you around if you have time for a visit. Thank you for your ongoing support!
All my best,
Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD
