Dr. Steven A. Newman completed his tenure with the UVA Department of Ophthalmology in December of 2023. He was more than just a faculty member in our department; he was a cornerstone of our residency program and a devoted steward of medical education. His legacy is not only carved in the awards and recognition he garnered throughout his career, but also in the hearts and minds of those he taught and treated.<\/p>\n

Dr. Newman set high standards through his teaching style, fostering an environment where excellence was expected and achieved. His approach, while demanding, was rooted in a deep commitment to developing top-tier ophthalmologists. Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs Dr. Leslie Olsakovsky, 1992 residency graduate, reflects, “Initially, his high expectations seemed daunting, but it became clear that his rigorous standards were a powerful motivator. His constant availability and eagerness to support us, regardless of the time of day, underscored his dedication to our education.”<\/p>\n

Never one to turn away a patient, Dr. Newman embodied the very essence of medical dedication. In the tradition of ophthalmologists from his generation, he managed a broad range of ophthalmic sub-specialties, ensuring that patient care was timely and comprehensive. Whether tackling complex neuro-ophthalmology cases, advanced glaucoma, strabismus, or conducting routine exams, his commitment to patient care was unwavering.<\/p>\n

As his residents transitioned into his colleagues, Dr. Newman\u2019s relationships with them deepened, reflecting his role as both a mentor and a friend. The social gatherings at his home, especially memorable events like the Y2K New Year\u2019s party, highlighted these personal connections. “Dr. Newman was deeply invested in our residents’ lives, viewing each one not just as a student, but as a potential future colleague,” said Professor Emeritus Dr. Brian Conway, our former department chair who hired Dr. Newman in 1980.<\/p>\n

Dr. Newman\u2019s relentless pursuit of excellence extended beyond the clinic. An avid marathon runner and hiker, he applied the same fervor to his personal hobbies, embodying the passion that defined every aspect of his life. His home displays an impressive collection of art and rare medical instruments, each piece a testament to his love for history and culture. He was devoted to theater and music, and often provided spontaneous entertainment in our hallways, or even an impromptu waiting room performance during the holiday season.<\/p>\n

Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Christian Carter, reflecting on Dr. Newman’s influence, noted, “His unwavering dedication to teaching and patient care profoundly shaped how I mentor my own residents today. I aim to emulate his thoroughness and accessibility, qualities that made him an exceptional educator and clinician.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Newman\u2019s commitment to ophthalmology was more than a career\u2014it was a calling. His legacy continues to inspire new generations of ophthalmologists, a testament to the enduring impact one dedicated individual can have on the field.<\/p>\n
