MS1-2

The pre-clerkship curriculum at the UVA School of Medicine includes several areas relevant to orthopaedic surgery. The musculoskeletal system that typically begins in January of your first year in medical school is often the first introduction to orthopaedic anatomy. This is the basis for all we do. Beyond the standard curriculum, there is an active orthopaedic interest group (OIG) led by students and designed to help foster education and relationships within the department of orthopaedic surgery.

Orthopaedic Interest Group

The Orthopaedics Interest Group (OIG) is a student-led organization that supports UVA medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery through structured exposure, mentorship, and residency preparation.

Our programming includes: high school football sideline shadowing with orthopaedic residents, hands-on surgical skills labs, a monthly orthopaedic subspecialty lecture series, resident-student mentorship, and panels led by senior medical students offering guidance on research, sub-internships, away rotations, and the match process. We continue to expand programming each year to better support students pursuing orthopaedics.

Students can join our listserv and GroupMe, connect with us at the organization fair, or reach out directly to one of our leaders.
