Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital

During their PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, residents spend a total of four 10-week blocks rotating at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a 700+ bed Level 1 Trauma center in Roanoke, VA.  Residents work with one of the largest orthopaedic groups in the state (30 physicians) in a variety of different clinical settings including the main hospital, the community hospital, and a private outpatient surgery center.  Residents receive surgical  training in all orthopaedic subspecialties, but with an emphasis on orthopedic trauma.

There’s a great deal of autonomy in Roanoke and upper-level residents can tailor their experience to their interests.  A total of 4 residents rotate in Roanoke in any given block.  Roanoke is a 2 hour drive from Charlottesville so two-bedroom apartments with cable/internet are provided to each resident. Residents are given access to a local gym with amenities such as an indoor basketball court, indoor and outdoor pools, squash courts, etc.  The Roanoke rotation is a busy yet fulfilling experience and residents often return to Charlottesville with a new-found confidence and competence.
