These are divided into two months each of adult reconstruction and oncology, spine surgery, and orthopaedic trauma.<\/p>\n<p>As an intern on an orthopaedics service, duties consist of peri-operative management of the surgical patient and obtaining a basic understanding of the day to day activities within the University of Virginia Medical Center. However, in addition to managing floor patients there is a large emphasis placed on surgical exposure that is further augmented by daily didactic sessions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-intern-2016.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2854 \" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-intern-2016-1024x143.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"753\" height=\"105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-intern-2016-1024x143.png 1024w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-intern-2016-300x42.png 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-intern-2016.png 1073w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a PGY-2 through PGY-5 your time is spent solely on orthopaedic services with continued development of operative skills and increased contribution to daily didactic sessions. Service responsibilities progress in a graduated fashion with the expectation that you will eventually lead the service and help educate more junior residents.<\/p>\n<p>During your PGY-3 and PGY-4 year you will spend a total of 40 weeks in Roanoke, Virginia as part of a local private practice orthopaedics group. During this time you will learn to function more independently as a consultant for acute and chronic orthopaedic conditions in addition to gaining extensive operative experience. Fully-furnished and conveniently-located housing is provided by the department to residents while in Roanoke.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-2016.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2855 \" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-2016.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"751\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-2016.png 1036w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-2016-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/orthopaedic-surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2015\/11\/Curriculum-2016-1024x651.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>DIDACTICS<\/h2>\n<p>The formal\u00a0 educational program\u00a0 includes structured orthopaedic\u00a0teaching conferences in fracture management, subspecialty core conferences, grand\u00a0rounds, indications conference, morbidity and mortality quality assurance conferences, small\u00a0group service-specific conferences, and basic science and anatomy conferences, all of which provide a comprehensive curriculum of\u00a0 fundamental orthopaedics.
